Caddis Dry Fly

Caddis Dry Fly

What Kinds of Flies Should You Use for Trout Fishing?

If you take a good and thorough look at even the simplest and/or smallest things, you’ll be amazed at how many lessons they can teach you. For example, any beginner in trout fishing would ask: “What’s the best fly to pick for a good catch?”

Just like a swindler trying to find his prey’s weakness in order to catch him off guard, the fisherman will need to study the surroundings, the character of the trout– and the trouts’ likes and dislikes. But trout are really witty, mind you. Trout are very wary of their environment, with a keen sense of sight and so once the trout discovers your bait, the same technique won’t work the second time around.

So what to do?

Just like a popular poll for food preferences, trout do have a common favorite! And that would be no other than the trio nymphs! The knowledge of this would cut out lots of searching for the best fly to use in trout fishing. According to some studies, trout will eat 90% of its diet preferring nymphs. Nymphs work their best especially when an insect hatch is due.

So what are the trio nymphs exactly?

Of course, among the best group are also the best members. That goes for the trio nymphs- Pheasant Tail, Copper John and Hare’s Ear!

Most experts would consider the Pheasant Tail to be one of the most preferable and best trout fishing flies, with its capability of copying many mayfly nymphs which are considered to be a classic in terms of performance. Because pheasant tail is easy to handle, it is perfect for those who cannot decide which fly to use.

Meanwhile, the Copper John, for many consecutive years, made its reputation as best for many reasons- mainly for having its realistic appeal. It has an excellent segmentation that resembles a mayfly and a stonefly. Ultrawire forms the abdomen that adds weight to the fly. Its weight makes it perfect for fast currents and for easily getting deep into the waters. Always have a variety of colors and sizes so that it will be more appealing to the trout.

The Hare’s Ear completes the trio as it makes a strong case. It is labeled the best trout fishing fly. This fly is very effective due to its “buggy” characteristics. It can imitate different insects such as mayfly, stonefly or even caddis fly, which trout really love. If you also prefer dry flies, it is also perfect as a dropper.

The best flies are always the ones that have the more natural characteristics, or rather, trout will really go for those closest to the truth.

These are a few tips and suggestions, since it is always debatable which trout fishing flies best suit the description of being number one. However, experience will teach you along the way about what to use and how to make a perfect decision in choosing the best flies.  Because then again not all trout have the same taste, especially when your secret ingredient has been found out.
