Fly Fishing Reel – A Rookie Angler’s Journal
These days, there are lots of anglers or fishermen who are having a hard time choosing the “perfect” fly fishing reel for them. If you are like me, a neophyte angler, you must be thinking of quitting fly fishing entirely because of the magnitude of the decision making and selection of rods, reels and baits. Not to mention that all of these do require a little more money than expected. Darn fishes. It makes me want to eat them all.
Let us start with fly fishing reels for example. Nowadays, the choices on reels are not easy as there are now hundreds of manufacturers who make them. All of them claim that they are the best. And all of them claim that theirs would help you reel in that precious catch of yours effectively and fast.
Let’s make life easier by first knowing the problem. Probably you too have asked these types of questions while on the stressful fly shop in your area. What is the difference with the expensive reel and with the cheap one? What the heck does ball – bearing and reel gear ration mean? Can you eat that? What type does support my Montana fly fishing trip? How many kinds are available? Which is the best?
The last question however, even complicates the problem. Each manufacturer (Yes, I am pretty sure on that) will claim that theirs are the best while engulf you with information that is compared with other brands. And the answer in your head maybe runs through this (yeah, I’m pretty sure this is what you are thinking as well…): “Can I trust them?” You might be even wondering if I am paid by a certain manufacturer to bamboozle you in buying their products. Don’t worry. I won’t sink that low.
Being a rookie fly fisher like you, I also had problems similar to this. Imagine repeating this process for each gear or equipment that you will need. If that was the case, it’ll be long enough before I jump decked and went back to basketball as my favorite past time activity.
The tip I had from my friend who attended a fly fishing school in Montana said that if you are going to prepare for a fishing escapade for the 1st time, make sure that you are with a veteran angler whom you can trust and who can back up his or her suggestions with successful experiences. He also mentioned that for novice angles like us, it is advised that we could try Montana fly fishing trips as the fishing spots in there are good for beginners.
