what is the oddest material/fur/feather you ever tied a fly with?
Two things, firstly i found a brilliant, very soft brown chenille from a blanket, which is very fine and the perfect “buggy” color, which makes excellent nymphs and finally the elasticated rubber cord from inside a folding walking stick, its diameter is just right for making legs on both nymphs and big dry flies, I like it as it knots well and isn’t as soft as some other flexi-floss type materials. Also its white, yet dyes very easily with standard fly tying dye. Its also possible to add a bar effect with some waterproof permanent pens.
Ive used other weird materials in the past, one of my favorites, which ive grown to accept as “normal” is using the co-axial copper cable sheaths for tying salmon tube flies, its like a weave of very fine copper wire in a tube, which adds attraction and weight to the lighter plastic and aluminium tubes, im not claiming to have invented the idea of using this material but its certainly worth a try for salmon and steelhead tubes-if you haven’t tried it i suggest giving it a try, it works very well.
